It was great to spend three mornings at Carleton Green Primary, a school literally round the corner from my house!
The Year 5/6 pupils were studying the Amazon rainforest so I used a jungle-themed adventure opener as a writing stimulus. The text included lots of setting description along with plenty of mystery and tension. I had great fun writing the text, which will feature in an Impossible Tale, and was excited to see what the pupils thought.
We worked through the text, the children picking out any ideas they thought would be useful for writing their own version. The sessions were filled with lots of writerly talk, which was great. The pupils inference skills blew my mind as they dug deep into the text and read between the lines to discover my intentions as a writer. Each session concluded after the pupils had planned their own story openers. I can’t wait to return soon to hear some of their edited openers.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Carleton Green and would like to thank Mr Jones for inviting me back. The children were a joy to work with and left me enthused and buzzing with writing energy!
