Carleton Green is a short walk from my home and it’s a school I’ve built great links with over the last five years.
It was lovely to return to be part of their ‘Reading Day’, which kicked off with a storytelling assembly with Year 3 – 6. There was a dragon theme for the day, so I shared a tale about a dragon encounter I faced in my youth! The story was only ten minutes in duration, but the children listened beautifully throughout.
Next up was a trio of writing sessions with the Year 5/6 classes.
We pulled apart a piece of text I’d created describing the dragon encounter. Our focus was the dragon’s physical appearance and actions, alongside ways in which I had tried to ‘show’ my feelings. After lots of discussion, the children planned their own dragon encounters. The sessions were fast-paced and before I knew it we had reached lunchtime.
I had a splendid time at Carleton Green and can’t wait to hear some of the pupils writing when I return soon. Thank you Mrs Cassidy and Miss Murray for inviting me to visit and organising the visit.
