It’s always extra special to make a visit to a school for the first time. Despite having to get up really early, I was really excited to get to Moorside Primary Academy in Skelmersdale.
The morning kicked off with a whole school storytelling assembly. I put on the waistcoat to share ‘Pat On The Head’, which is a disgustingly entertaining story about cow poo! The children laughed and reacted in all the right places. A top start to the morning.
After catching my breath, I joined Y6 for a writing session. We pulled apart a piece of unpublished text about a particularly nasty character. The children generated lots of great ideas and I must admit I wish I’d used some of them in my writing! Lots of class and partner talk saw those ideas grow and the children got on with planning their version of my character. We finished with a bit of freestyle story telling, which is always a bit nerve-wracking! I then left the children to start work on their first draft.
The session was repeated with Y5 and they were as enthusiastic and engaged as the older pupils. I can’t wait to see some examples of the writing and hopefully I’ll post a couple on here. Watch this space!
Big thanks must go to Mrs Howard for inviting me in. We’ve got another date in the diary for a return visit, which is really great. I can’t wait to return to Moorside for more storytelling and writing action later in the year!
