Most of my writing workshops take place with KS2 children or high school students. Occasionally, I am asked to write with KS1 pupils. When Mrs Kippax asked me to work with her Y1 pupils as part of their ‘Awesome Authors’ topic, I jumped at the chance.
The theme for the morning was pirates. To start the session, I put on the storytelling waistcoat to share an Impossible Tale about a fearsome pirate. The children listened beautifully and they answered all my questions at the end. Ace listening.
Next up, we began to build sentences about another pirate. We talked about our ideas and modelled lots of sentences, making sure we added some description.
Finally, the children went off to draw and write about their own pirate. They did brilliantly. I’ve added examples below:
I hope the children are proud of their awesome writing. I was so impressed with the description and punctuation – check out the full stops and capitals!
Check out the Torrisholme Primary website for some pictures from the morning.
I had a great morning working with the two Y1 classes and would like to thank Mrs Kippax for inviting me to visit.
