It’s fabulous to revisit schools that I have been to before on my writing adventure, but there is always something extra special about visiting a school for the first time. Admittedly, I get a bit nervous, but I’m also very excited too.
Park Community Academy contacted me about taking part in their ‘Book Day’ and I jumped at the chance. I had heard lots of great things about the school, so I couldn’t wait for my first visit.
After being warmly welcomed, I set up in the hall ready for an author assembly. It was a joy to watch the children and staff enter the hall in their wonderful book-themed costumes. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing my writing adventure, squeezing nearly four years into 40 minutes. To finish the session, I put the storytelling waistcoat on and shared one of the Tales from the latest book. A great start to the day!
I caught my breath and grabbed a drink before visiting two classes to share some more of my Tales. The children listened brilliantly as we ventured on to a pirate ship and tangled with one of the most feared pirates on the high seas. Luckily we made it back in one piece!
The morning ended in the book sale, where I answered lots of questions and chatted to the pupils and staff. It turned out that I had taught two of the members of staff back in my teaching days. It was lovely to catch up, but I ended up feeling very old!
I’d like to thank Mrs Swift for organising the morning. I had an amazing time sharing my stories with the fabulous pupils and staff at Park Community Academy. Hopefully I’ll get to return at some point in the future.
