This was my second visit to Singleton after an author assembly earlier in the year.
The morning kicked off with a storytelling session with all of the children from Foundation to Year 6. I pulled on the story waistcoat to share Junk From The Trunk from Impossible Tales. Without leaving the safety of the school hall we journeyed back in time and ended up on a pirate galleon where we tangled with Deep Scar Davis. Fortunately we all made it back safe and sound! The children listened beautifully for the full duration of the twenty-five minute story.
After scooting back to class with Year 3/4, I removed my storytelling head and replaced it with my writing one. The children had been reading Blown Away from Impossible Tales and their task was to create their own ending for the story. We ‘magpied’ our way through the final few paragraphs of the story and the children highlighted any vocabulary or phrases which they wanted to use in their writing. After lots of discussion, they planned out their ending and got stuck into their first draft. They worked really well and some of the writing blew me away!
I managed a brew at break before repeating the session with the Year 5/6 pupils. They were equally as enthusiastic and worked ever so well. Some of the ideas which they generated left me wishing I could rewrite the ending and add them in!
The children were planning on completing their first drafts before trying out some of the editing techniques we discussed. I’m excited about reading the finished pieces and hope to share some on the website.
Many thanks to Mrs Millward for organising the morning. I had a fantastic time and it really was a privilege to work with so many enthusiastic pupils. Hopefully I will get to return soon.
