I had visited Bispham Endowed a couple of times with my books but this was my first writing visit.
The task was to create a short write about a nasty character called Bazza Simmons and the Year 6 group I was working with were enthusiastic and clearly loved writing. We started by reading an extract which I’d created and the children picked out any words or phrases which they liked. After lots of partner talk and discussion, the pupils jotted down their notes about Bazza which included his physical appearance, behaviour and how other children were reacting to him. I encouraged the children to try to look for ways in which they could subtly describe his character.
The children then had about twenty minutes to create a short descriptive scene which gave clues about Bazza’s character. They did a cracking job and we finished the session by sharing some super sentences. I was genuinely blown away by the quality of the writing and left the school absolutely buzzing that I had been given the opportunity to work with so many talented writers. Hopefully I’ll get to share some writes when the children have finished their editing.
Thanks to Miss Haslam for setting up the session. Also big thanks to Mrs Treasure and Mrs Wright, it was a pleasure to work alongside both members of staff.
