I made an early start to head to Barnoldswick CE Primary for my first visit to the school.
The morning started in Year 5. The pupils were keen to ask lots of questions before we started writing so I explained about my favourite book, where I get my story ideas from and what inspired me to write plus lots of other points related to the books and writing.
The children had read ‘Blown Away’ from Impossible Tales and we started by recapping the main points before reading an extract from the story. The children read an extract featuring the last three paragraphs and ‘magpied’ any words or phrases which they liked. They then discussed alternative endings which could replace mine and talked to their partners about some weird and wacky possibilities. The children then planned their alternative ending in bullet point form before writing a first draft. We just had time to share some of their ‘super sentences’ before break. I was blown away by the children’s writing and I can’t wait to share some examples on here when they are further along the editing process.

After break, I repeated the session with Year 6 and they created some equally fantastic endings. The children worked their socks off and I was thrilled to hear that they had enjoyed the session. I’m sure they will do their best with the editing and I look forward to reading their writing soon.
Thanks to Ms Dodgson for inviting me into her wonderful school. It was a pleasure to write with so many enthusiastic pupils. Hopefully I’ll get to return again at some point soon.
