It had been a year since my last visit to Holy Family and I couldn’t wait to introduce the children to Eric and write with some of the classes.
We kicked off the morning with an author assembly with Year 2 – 6. The children listened so well as I explained about the writing process involved in creating the story. They got to see Martin’s illustrations from the first pencil drafts to the finals which went in the book. We had some fun trying to spot the alterations which Martin had made and the eagle-eyed children spotted them all. The pupils even agreed that the text and illustrations matched which was ace!
After the assembly, I followed the Year 4 children back to class. The children had been reading Blown Away from Impossible Tales and the task for the morning was to create alternative endings for the story. We read the final three paragraphs and ‘magpied’ any ideas which the children liked and fancied using in their writing. There was loads of discussion about different ways of ending the story and the children created came up with some fab ideas! After lots of partner talk and idea sharing, they bullet pointed a plan for each paragraph. When they were happy with their plans, they started to write the final three paragraphs of their ending to my story.
I then had to scoot to Year 5 to deliver the session with them before finishing the morning in Year 6 where I repeated the session. It was a fantastic morning and magical to see the children so excited about writing. Each class was fantastic and the children threw themselves into the task. I will hopefully showcase some of the writes on here when they have been edited.
Thanks Mrs Moreton for inviting me in to school. I had a fantastic morning and can’t wait to return to see you all again.
