After more than 80 primary visits, this was my first time in a high school so I was a little apprehensive to say the least. My teaching career was spent in a primary school so this was unknown territory!
I needn’t have worried as the 180 Year 7 children made me feel so welcome and listened attentively as I explained my writing journey right from the planning stages of Impossible Tales up to the release of Eric Appleby. I shared an extract from the Tales before moving on to Eric. We looked at the illustration process as Martin’s illustrations were projected on to a huge wall. I then shared a couple of extracts from Eric’s adventure.
As well as encouraging the students to read and work hard with their writing, I wanted to discuss their dreams and aspirations. Occupations mentioned included a paramedic, a television presenter, a footballer, a teacher and an author. It was refreshing to hear the students talk openly about their dreams and hopes.
After signing a few books and snapping some class photos with Eric, the students headed off for their next session. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them and I’d like to extend my appreciation to Mrs Clempson who set up the visit. It was a pleasure to share my writing adventure!
